Agrowill Group to develop organic farming in Utena region
Agrowill Group has reported its intention to develop organic farming in one of its companies, Agrowill Alanta. The Alanta-based company of Agrowill Group plans to grow organic grain crops on a 501 ha plot of land controlled by it.
“Demand for organic products is growing rapidly both in the global and Lithuanian market. Demand for organic food in the world outstrips supply approximately ten-fold. Therefore, there is huge market potential here. Utena region does not have very fertile soil suitable for traditional crops, but it is ideal for growing organic grain,” Algirdas Pereckas, the head of Agrowill Group, said.
According to Pereckas, organic farming is currently the fastest-growing agricultural sector in the European Union. In the past five years, the number of organic farms increased four-fold in Denmark, six-fold in Italy and 12-fold in Spain. Austria is currently seen as an organic farming leader: 14% of farms there have organic produce certificates.
“Moreover, public opinion polls have shown that about half of respondents agree to pay more for organic products. The growing popularity of organic food markets and trade in organic products in stores also show a general tendency in the public to choose healthier food,” Pereckas said.
The Alanta holding, which is capable of growing larger qualities of organic products, will be able to make a significant contribution to the development of the healthy food chain in Lithuania.
